Established in 1963, as library of the Pedagogical Institute, the University of Oradea Library has acquired, since 1990, an encyclopedic value.
The new main building of the Library, whose inauguration took place in 2010, has a floor area of 7,650 square meters on 5 levels of the building. They allow organizing collections fields and specializations in the 5 reading rooms: 4 used for books and 1 for periodicals (newspapers and magazines), with a total of 520 seats and the possibility of consulting the open access publications shelf system.
The total amount of publications held within the library contains over 388,000 books, magazines, STAS, patents, CDs, DVDs, all of which can be found in the traditional catalogue (alphabetical and systematic) and OPAC computerized catalogue, introduced through the library Liberty5. The OPAC system used for online search finds the publications needed from the library collections.
The University Library collections acquired through purchases, exchange of publications with over 60 partners and major donations from scholars and academics comprise the following:
- Monica Lovinescu – Virgil Ierunca (14,532 books, magazines and vynils that have made up their personal library from Paris);
- Academician Mircea Zaciu Ph.D. (3,261 publications);
- Professor M. C. Demetrescu Ph.D. (2,433 publications);
- Academician Mugur Isărescu, governor of National Bank of Romania;
- Professor Teodor Maghiar, Ph.D., former rector of the University of Oradea.
